Why Shouldn't You Take Medicine With Grapefruit Juice

In a recent episode of SciShow, host Hank Green explains why it’s not safe to drink grapefruit juice while taking medication for conditions such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and anxiety.

Grapefruit is full of a type of organic compound called furanocoumarin, which interferes with the activity of an enzyme in your small intestine called CYP3A4. Problem is, that interference means your body will absorb more of certain medicines, for things like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and anxiety, than it’s supposed to. This enzyme’s normal job is to chemically change certain potentially dangerous compounds before they can get to your bloodstream or liver. That way, they’re easier for your body to eliminate. But it also recognizes lots of different medications, and deactivates them the way it would any chemical — meaning that a large amount of the drug you take never actually makes it into your body to do its job.

If you’ve ever wondered why your car will sometimes give you a painful shock when you climb out, this video explains the science behind it, and how to prevent it.

In this video from the Physics Girl YouTube channel, host Dianna Cowern explains exactly why exiting your car can cause a nasty static shock when you touch the outside of it. When you get out of the car, you slide your body across the seat, and that can leave both the seat and your body statically charged. If the air is cold and dry enough, the charge will quickly and violently transfer from your body into the car’s metal and shock you. Cowern suggests the easiest way to avoid this is by touching the metalwhile you exit the vehicle. Even if charge builds up, it will slowly flow from your body to the metal without creating the violent “shocking” event.

How researchers harvest spider silk looks like something straight out of science fiction.

A Golden Orb Weaver (Nephila edulis) is sedated with carbon dioxide gas, and pinned around her limbs and abdomen, keeping her in place without causing any harm. Silk is pulled by tweezer from the spinnerets and attached to the spool with a dab of glue after which the motor is started to begin harvesting. The silk produced here consists mainly of major ampullate silk which forms the main structure of the web (like scaffolding) and minor ampullate silk, which is used to form the main spiral of the spider’s web. Nephila edulis females can produce up to six different types of silk.

It’s possible to harvest between 30-80 metres of silk in one go, after which the spider can be released back to its web to feed ready for reeling another day.
