How To Of The Day: How To Do Nothing

How To Do Nothing

Do you need to carve time out of your day to be still? Sometimes, you need to take a break from the daily hustle and bustle and just do nothing.

Laugh, go ahead, but you know as well as I do that it’s not as easy as you think. Just take a day off and stay home and see what you end up doing:

  • laundry
  • social media
  • writing that post that you’ve been putting off
  • dishes
  • you might even MAKE THE BED

See what I mean? With most of us working, tending to our families, and trying to “do it all,” there has never been a time when people need to slow down and quiet their minds more than now. Doing nothing is NOT as easy as it sounds, but I have a few tips that might just help you totally veg out and relax, even if it’s for only PART of the day.

1. Take a nap

Personally, I’ve NEVER been able to do this, not even when I’m sick (I have a hard enough time sleeping at night), but Mr. S has perfected the art of the nap. He turns on boring TV and gets under the covers for a quick catnap to rejuvenate.

2. Get out of the house

Grab a chair and go sit outside, listen to the birds chirping and feel the wind on your skin. If I go sit at the beach or a park with a good book and a glass of wine, I can completely zone out. If I stay in the house, there’s a 99% chance that something will grab my attention and I’ll be sucked into working.

3. Put on headphones & listen to music

Draw the shades and dance, sing at the top of your lungs, or sit back and be transported to that concert or time in your life when that song meant something to you. It’s amazing how music can change your frame of mind.

4. Shut off the distractions

I have to completely shut down the computer, turn off the television and turn off my mobile phone, or my mind goes right to “I wonder what’s doing on…”

5. Run a bath

There’s something about relaxing in a bathtub filled with bubbles and a wonderful scent that can help you to tune out. When you’re ready to come back to reality, finish with a COLD shower to close your pores and wake you up.

Even just stealing 5-10 minutes a day that’s JUST for YOU will make a difference in the rest of your day.
