Obama Youth Brigade: Church Attendance Forbidden

What happened to the First Amendment? “Congress shall MAKE NO LAW respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”

Is this the change you really voted for? President Obama has only been in office for two months. Now we have HR 1388. The Bill was sponsored by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) with 37 others. The Bill was introduced to the floor of the House of Representatives where both Republicans and Democrats voted 321-105 in favor. Next it goes to the Senate for a vote and then on to President Obama.

This bill’s title is called “Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education” (GIVE). It forms what some are calling “Obama’s Youth Brigade.” Obama’s plan is require anyone receiving school loans and others to serve at least three months as part of the brigade. His goal is one million youth! This has serious Nazi Germany overtones to it.

The Bill would forbid any student in the brigade to participate in “engaging in religious instruction, conducting worship services, providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship, constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship, maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship, or engaging in any form of religious proselytization.” That means no church attendance or witnessing.

Again, is this what America voted for? Here is part of the HR1388 Bill’s wording:

SEC. 1304. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES AND INELIGIBLE ORGANIZATIONS.

Section 125 (42 U.S.C. 12575) is amended to read as follows:

SEC. 125. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES AND INELIGIBLE ORGANIZATIONS.

(a) Prohibited Activities- A participant in an approved national service position under this subtitle may not engage in the following activities:

(1) Attempting to influence legislation.

(2) Organizing or engaging in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes.

(7) Engaging in religious instruction, conducting worship services, providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship, constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship, maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship, or engaging in any form of religious proselytization.

  1. Separation of Chruch and State viewed as “Nazi Germany overtones”? Since when?

I have no issues with added stipulations to individuals receiving any type of financial aid. In fact, given the lack of overview concerning the bailout/relief ‘loans’, stipulations are the best idea yet.

I see many complaints about restricting these ‘volunteers’ from using their volunteer time to that of the volunteer program. There is no place for religion or politicing during their volunteer time. Help me understand why this is an issue?!

From what I can read, these stipulations only help inforce our government laws and policies from separating religion from our political areanas.

We’re Americans first and foremost. We need to keep that in mind when we ask citizens to step up to the plate and act like Americans.

Be proud of our country. Be proud to be American. And if you need to borrow money, be Proud in the requirements or stipulations you agree to when accepting that money!

  2. First of all it’s important to note that the amendments to the USC aren’t limited only to when the person is acting in a volunteer capacity. As worded it would be a crime for a person in this program to even contact their Congressperson and discuss pending legislation with them.

Nor could this person even act as a janitor in their church because that would be “maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship”

People who took student loans could be arrested at a protest, no matter what they were protesting. They couldn’t sign a petition, or even boycott a product or service legally.

Of course we know that they wouldn’t arrest everyone for doing these things, but they absolutely would use this as license to mess with people at will.

I can’t believe that we’re seriously discussing creating a Hitler Youth Brigade in the United States, do people really not read history anymore?
