Picture Of The Day: Polar Bears Waving

Polar Bears Waving

Well, Hello There

Photograph by Laura Keene, National Geographic Your Shot

“It was a surreal experience to be in the presence of these magnificent creatures,” writes Your Shot member Laura Keene of photographing this seemingly approachable pair of bears in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Keene says they stood and appeared to wave in greeting when a nearby pair of cubs captured their attention. Polar bears, she says, “congregate on the barrier islands off Kaktovik in northern Alaska every fall to partake of leftovers from Inupiat whaling [activity] before the Beaufort Sea freezes and they move on to hunt seal.”

Keene’s image was recently featured in Your Shot’s Daily Dozen.

Photo Cheat Card for Photographers

Learning even just the basics of photography takes a bit of work and one of the more complex ideas is the relationship between ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. German photography blog Photoblog Hamburg has a graphic explaining how it works.

The graphic does a reasonable job at explaining how the amount of light you let it affects a photo, how certain settings can increase noise, and how focus changes. The top section represents aperture, the middle shutter speed, and the bottom ISO. It’s not a perfect representation of exactly what you’ll get, but it’s a nice visualization that helps you understand the basics.

Picture Of The Day: Star-spangled Sky

Old Glory in the sky!

Star-spangled sky
Spectacular image by Chicago photographer Jeff Lewis appears to show an American flag in the sky

It may not be a Star-Spangled Banner, but this incredible photo of the evening sky is more like the US flag than any cloudscape you are likely to see.

The beautiful vista, tweeted by Chicago photographer Jeff Lewis, shows a cluster of dark blue clouds in the upper left-hand corner and a pattern of red horizontal stripes cast by the brilliant setting sun.

The pretty photo has already had more than 300,000 views on imgur, with some commenters wishing ‘the stars were out on the blue part of it’, while others said it had ‘blown their minds’.

Wallpaper Of The Day: Shake It Off

Shake It Off
Photograph by Michael Pachis, National Geographic Your Shot

“The Memphis Zoo houses bald eagles that have been injured too badly to be returned to the wild,” writes Your Shot member Michael Pachis. “Usually the eagles are perched in their tree watching the visitors. However, this time I noticed one … hopping on the ground toward a water pool in the aviary. He surprised me by dunking his entire head in the water” before coming up shaking.
