Iceland Giants

Iceland Giants

This amazing VICE documentary takes a look at why Iceland breeds so many strongmen.

Despite its tiny population, Iceland has a reputation in the World’s Strongest Man competition that stands higher than perhaps any other country’s. This small, black rock in the middle of the ocean has produced a lineage of strongmen dating back to the Vikings.

VICE went out there to investigate why this tiny island produces such strong people. Hanging out at Jakabol, a gym run by ex-champion Magnus Ver Magnusson, we met a whole host of Icelandic strongmen, which includes Hafthor “Thor” Bjornsson, the 6’9″ star of Game of Thrones.

The Yoga Farmer

The Yoga Farmer
A very scary video indeed!

The Yoga Farmer Is the Most Bizarre Video You’ll See This Year

That may seem like a boastful claim, but bear in mind that I watch bizarre videos for a living, so I know of what I speak. Watching this video will make you think that you’ve accidentally consumed a psychedelic drug–and a lot of it.

There is little information available about this video, presumably because everyone associated with it has attempted to destroy all evidence of it, then changed their identities, and disappeared. But I surmise that during the 1990s, there was a direct-to-video production company called Mystic Fire Video. According to co-founder Sheldon Rochlin, it was “very concerned with the transformation of consciousness, not only through spiritual teaching but through art, music, poetry and film.”

That is, of course, why one produce a Hee Haw-like countrified introduction of yoga to children apparently called E-i E-i Yoga. It is also why you would have a cow puppet that teaches you how to breathe and a giant rooster with a Jamaican accent.

It makes complete sense to me–which should probably be worrying. I should have someone drive me to hospital.

What It’s Like To Run A 135 Mile Race

Josh is a running addict. He wakes up early four to five days a week to run. In this video he faces his greatest obstacle the Brazil 135, a 135 mile race on Path of Faith in Brazil.

Completing such a massive challenge is an incredible achievement. Josh is a real inspiration.

From his blog:

As some of you probably noticed from the photos from Brazil 135, I wore a GoPro camera on my head for chunks of the race.

What It's Like To Run A 135 Mile Race

The headstrap mount was actually pretty comfortable and did a great job both on video mode and timelapse. It didn’t do so well at night, but that’s to be expected when it’s pitch black and the camera doesn’t have a flash or light (and I couldn’t figure out how to comfortably wear both the camera and a headlamp).

I borrowed the camera from some friends at Buzzfeed and after I got home, they used the footage to put together a short video of the race with some voiceover by yours truly.

Does Shivering Help You Lose Weight?

In a nutshell… Global Warming makes you fat!

Will shivering help you lose weight? It’s unlikely, but exercising in the cold might be beneficial! The body burns energy to keep you warm through a process called “temperature training,” and Trace is here to tell you how getting use to the cold will help you burn away those unwanted calories.

Read More:
Cold-Weather Benefit: Shivering May Count As Exercise
“Shivering triggers a response in muscles similar to that of exercise, new research suggests. The study, published today (Feb. 4) in the journal Cell Metabolism, found that the muscles of shivering people triggers the release of a hormone that activates brown fat, a type of fat that burns energy to generate heat.”

Evidence That Shivering and Exercise May Convert White Fat to Brown
“A new study suggests that shivering and bouts of moderate exercise are equally capable of stimulating the conversion of energy-storing ‘white fat’ into energy-burning ‘brown fat’.”

Brown Fat – Keeps You Warm And Keeps You Slim
“People with more brown fat seem better able to stay warm when it is cold, Canadian researchers reported in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. They added that the findings of their study could eventually be used to find ways of fighting obesity. Not much has been known about brown fat, a type of good fat, until recently.”

Cold Air Could Help You Lose Weight
“‘Temperature training’ may be what is missing from your weight loss plan. New evidence suggests that regular exposure to mildly cold air may help people lose weight by increasing the amount of energy their bodies have to expend to keep their core temperature up, researchers say.”

Turn Down The Thermostat To Support Weight Loss, Say Researchers
“New research suggests weight loss isn’t just about living a healthy lifestyle — the temperature of the space you live in may have an impact too.”
