This chart, from My Best Smoker, covers the cook times and cooking temperatures of 17 of the most mouth-watering meats. You can learn to smoke brisket, salmon, chicken, turkey, ribs, and even hot wings. The outermost ring (light red) on the inside of each meat tells you what temperature to smoke at, then the yellow ring tells you for how long, and the brownish ring on the inside tells you the recommended internal temperature of the meat so you know when it’s done. The graphic is designed for use with electric smokers, but some of these suggestions may still work with charcoal or dry smokers.

How to make a marshmallow catapult.

Here’s something that will occupy the kids’ time and while may appear (to them) to be a total time suck, it will teach fine motor skills, ingenuity and possibly collaborative play.

Steps:

Marshmallow Catapult 1
1 Create a triangle with the skewers. Join the ends with one of the large marshmallows to design a large triangle.

Marshmallow Catapult 2
2 Add a pyramid to your triangle. With the triangle laying on a flat surface, build a pyramid above the triangle.

Marshmallow Catapult 3
3 Create your catapult launcher. Tape the plastic spoon handle to the end of another skewer. Wrap the tape around the spoon several times to secure tightly (this spoon will see a lot of action).

Marshmallow Catapult 4
4 Place the thin rubber band around the top marshmallow. Lay the rubber band over the marshmallow that has topped the pyramid. Allow the band to just lay there.

Marshmallow Catapult 5
5 Slide spoon skewer through the rubber band so that it is being supported by the rubber band. Pierce the end of it on the marshmallow at the base.

Marshmallow Catapult 6
6 Use mini marshmallows as your “launching rocks.” You can also use other small candies or items–anything that will fit inside the spoon. Hold the base as you pull the spoon back gently against the tension of the band.

Rules of thumb and experience help, but we prefer repeatable experiments. And if you see this and laugh, you’re probably not as good as you think you are. Thankfully, the recipe for a one-move parking job is pretty simple.

1. Pull alongside the car ahead of the space you want. Align your rear axle with that car’s bumper. Turn the wheel toward the curb at full lock.

2. Back up until the center of your inside rear tire aligns with the streetside edge of the forward car. Straighten wheel, continue to reverse.

3. When your outside tire aligns with that same edge, turn the wheel the other way.

4. If all went according to plan, you’re in the space, bodywork intact. Get out and admire your work.
