The .50-caliber sniper rifle: Confederate soldiers first mounted scopes on high-powered rifles during the Civil War, but the first specially designed sniper rifles for both police and military use came about in the 1970s. The barrels are precisely machined and specially mounted to minimize recoil.
Many Western sniper rifles use NATO standard 7.62-mm cartridges, but models using massive .50-caliber bullets are so powerful they can take out enemy ordnance by sheer force of impact.
One .50-caliber model, the McMillan TAC-50, set the record for longest kill in 2002 when a Canadian corporal shot a Taliban insurgent from a mile and a half away in Afghanistan.
“The advantage is range,” says Wright. “You can fire 2,000 meters plus, more than a mile, and hit a target accurately. … If it hits it’s probably going to kill.”

As a political moderate and (at times) what is commonly called “liberal” from the old school, I am not afraid of telling right wingers that they are often full of youknowwhat. But when it comes to 2d Amendment rights and the allegation that these rights lead to violence in our society, I stand squarely with many on the right. It is not weapons that cause violence. It is sick minded people who do.
PBS recently presented a series which discussed the sick minded who engage in mass violence. The conclusion one can only draw from that series is that the sick minded need more health insurance, better health care, and psychological counseling. Another solution is people activism – that is, when you are aware that a sicko is out to create violence — CALL THE DAMN COPS!
Recently a violence prone nutcase in NYS was found to have made threats against President Obama and other Democrats. A woman called the cops and he was put into prison where he belongs. This is what all of us need to do as ALL of us have a stake in public safety and society’s well being.
ACTIVISM, not gun confiscation is the key to public safety.
