Emergency Spare Key
How to make an emergency spare key using household items.

This is PERFECT for an emergency!

Ever find yourself in need of an emergency spare key? I know I have, and that’s why this video is so helpful. Dave Hax is back with a brand-new tutorial to show you how to make a print of an original padlock key, and transfer it onto the lid of a food can. You can then cut out your own DIY spare key and use it to unlock your padlock.

This spare key is so compact, you can keep it right in your wallet. It’s also helpful if you have guests coming to town and you want them to have their own extra set of keys. This is awesome!

  • Hold the original key over a flame.
  • Once the key has a black coating, place it somewhere safe to cool.
  • Take strip of tape and place it onto the key to make a print.
  • Carefully peel off the tape.
  • Remove the lid from a can of food and lay it on a table.
  • Stick the tape on the lid.
  • Using a sharp pair of scissors, carefully cut out the key and make it as precise as possible.

Pretty simple, huh? Dave notes you can use pliers and safety gloves for this simple DIY, and please be careful not to cut yourself.

Survive A Free-Falling Elevator

Researchers at the MIT Center for Biomedical Engineering have figured out the best way to survive if you ever find yourself stuck in a falling elevator.

Enjoy!

The chances of you being in a free-falling elevator are remarkably small, but this information might at least help alleviate any fear you have toward riding them.

As this video from the Business Insider YouTube channel explains, there have been very few incidents of elevator cables snapping. That being said, researchers at MIT decided to figure out the physics of surviving such an event, and it’s not jumping right before impact. The trick is to lay down flat on the floor in the center of the car so all of your body weight will be spread out. When the car crashes into the bottom, the force will be evenly distributed, giving you a chance at surviving. Again, this will probably never happen, but now you can hop onto the elevator with a little less fear.
