My first is in blue, but not in glue,
My second in old, but not in new.
My third in look, but not in see,
My last in ask, but not in plea.
My whole has leaves but not a flower,
I’ll help you pass an idle hour.

What am I?

Below are four epitaphs (writing on gravestones). From the writings, can you tell the occupation of each person?

1. Here lies Mortimer Bibbs.
He took part of ours and gave it to big brother, but he always had good form.

2. Here lies Dirk McDuff, who toppled giants with weapons of steel. If only he’d heard his partner’s shout before the giants found their revenge.

3. Here lies Suzy Smelt. She constructed many a bomb but mostly brought smiles to our faces.

4. Here lies Ethel Grant. She spent her whole life fighting with what she will now become.

In English, “re” is a prefix usually meaning “again”, such as in “rebuild” (build again). However, there are many words starting with “re” which have a totally different meaning without the “re”.

You will be given two definitions, one for a word starting with “re”, and one for the remaining word without the “re” (either definition could be given first).
Example: exhausting / ceasing employment
Answer: tiring / retiring

1. difficult search / politely ask
2. trustworthy / legally responsible
3. hospital room / prize for achievement
4. back in good health / put something over
5. rhythmic force in arteries / drive back by force
6. smooth by ironing / subdue by force
7. become less severe / provided in loan
8. process of updating / act of seeing
