Survive A Free-Falling Elevator

Researchers at the MIT Center for Biomedical Engineering have figured out the best way to survive if you ever find yourself stuck in a falling elevator.

Enjoy!

The chances of you being in a free-falling elevator are remarkably small, but this information might at least help alleviate any fear you have toward riding them.

As this video from the Business Insider YouTube channel explains, there have been very few incidents of elevator cables snapping. That being said, researchers at MIT decided to figure out the physics of surviving such an event, and it’s not jumping right before impact. The trick is to lay down flat on the floor in the center of the car so all of your body weight will be spread out. When the car crashes into the bottom, the force will be evenly distributed, giving you a chance at surviving. Again, this will probably never happen, but now you can hop onto the elevator with a little less fear.

DO NOT MISS THIS… it can save your life!

Mike the Marine shows us how to use pants as a flotation device to avoid drowning.

https://youtu.be/1vxHJWyYnQM

Even though I know how to swim, I still have a very real fear of drowning. I mean, let’s say you’re in some type of boating accident and you end up in the water without a life jacket… what do you do? You try to survive by treading water and you also try to help others, but the reality is that we only have so much energy. So our best bet is to find something that will help keep you afloat. But what if there’s no such thing around? Well, that’s where Mike the Marine comes in. Mike is going to show you a lost skill that will help you survive a drowning scenario. Seriously… I had no idea what the heck he was doing, but the end result is truly incredible. They totally need to teach this in swimming lessons!

Make your own battery using copper coins, vinegar, foil and cardboard. I had enough energy to power an LED with mine and also a TV remote! Really simple science project and easy to do yourself.

How To Do The Perfect Push Up
A short video tutorial on how to do the perfect Push Up.

In the video above, I tell you how to do push ups with proper form and how to build up to doing them on the floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it bad to flare the elbows out?

If the elbows are out (i.e., abducted 90-degrees from your body) it puts unnecessary strain on the elbow tendons (a valgus strain) and reduces the amount of subacromial space in the shoulder joint which can lead to impingement.

But that’s not all, it’s simply not as efficient of a position to generate strength from and doesn’t carry over to the more difficult pushing progressions. For example, if you’re ever going to do crow pose or handstand push ups or dips, you’re going to need to keep the elbows from flaring out, so you might as well be doing pushups in a way that transfers better to those exercises.

Why do I have to keep the hips tucked?

You will notice that I emphasize posterior pelvic tilt, which is the same as the hollow body position, if you’re familiar with that term. If you arch your lower back in plank or the push up, it will put a lot of pressure on your lower back and hurt it.  I talk about the importance of this positioning in my comprehensive handstand tutorial.

How To Of The Day: Baking A Perfect Thin-Crust Pizza

Andrew Janjigian explains how to simulate a pizzaiolo’s professional oven at home with this simple, but surprising, tip.

Enjoy!

With thin-crust pies, fast is best. The trick is a hot oven, as high as it goes, baking on an upper rack—heat rises, and it’s reflected back onto the top of the pie from the ceiling, to cook the toppings quickly too—and a good baking surface, like stone, or better yet, steel, which conducts heat better than ceramic stone.

Thin-Crust Pizza Dough Recipe

INGREDIENTS

3 cups (16 1/2 ounces) bread flour, plus more for work surface (see note)
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon instant or rapid-rise yeast
1 1/3 cups ice water (about 10 1/2 ounces) (see note)
1 tablespoon vegetable oil, plus more for work surface
1 1/2 teaspoons table salt

INSTRUCTIONS
1. In food processor fitted with metal blade, process flour, sugar, and yeast until combined, about 2 seconds. With machine running, slowly add water through feed tube; process until dough is just combined and no dry flour remains, about 10 seconds. Let dough stand 10 minutes.

2. Add oil and salt to dough and process until dough forms satiny, sticky ball that clears sides of workbowl, 30 to 60 seconds. Remove dough from bowl and knead briefly on lightly oiled countertop until smooth, about 1 minute. Shape dough into tight ball and place in large, lightly oiled bowl. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 24 hours and up to 3 days.
