How To Of The Day: Emergency Orange Candle
Power outages are never any fun, but they’re even worse if you get hit with one when you don’t have any candles around. Thankfully, Instructables user DualPhase shares a way to convert an orange into a candle in a pinch.
Using an orange, grapefruit, or lemon, and any type of oil, you can hollow out the fruit and use the middle stem as a wick. After hollowing it out, all you need to do is fill the skin with vegetable or olive oil and you’re all set. It’s a handy trick that certainly beats out using your cell phone for light in a pinch. It probably smells a lot better too. You can find the full guide over on Instructables.
How To Of The Day: How To Make A Sundial
How to make a DIY sundial from start to finish. Learn how to set up the proper angles for the hour lines on the dial plate and how to set the gnomon angle as well as how to position the sundial for accuracy.
Enjoy!
Making a sundial is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time. As with any project we do, we wanted to make it a bit different. Rather than making it with a standard round dial plate we went with a leaf for the plate. We learned a lot along the way and we were pretty happy with the end result.
What you’ll need
- Wood (scrap wood works for all of this, we used a small piece of cherry for the gnomon though)
- Dowel (if making a pedestal)
- Dremel or other rotary tool and craving bits
- Propane torch
- Resin (we use Famowood Glaze Coat)
- Stain and Finish
- Screws & Glue
