How To Of The Day: Emergency Spare Key

Emergency Spare Key
How to make an emergency spare key using household items.

This is PERFECT for an emergency!

Ever find yourself in need of an emergency spare key? I know I have, and that’s why this video is so helpful. Dave Hax is back with a brand-new tutorial to show you how to make a print of an original padlock key, and transfer it onto the lid of a food can. You can then cut out your own DIY spare key and use it to unlock your padlock.

This spare key is so compact, you can keep it right in your wallet. It’s also helpful if you have guests coming to town and you want them to have their own extra set of keys. This is awesome!

  • Hold the original key over a flame.
  • Once the key has a black coating, place it somewhere safe to cool.
  • Take strip of tape and place it onto the key to make a print.
  • Carefully peel off the tape.
  • Remove the lid from a can of food and lay it on a table.
  • Stick the tape on the lid.
  • Using a sharp pair of scissors, carefully cut out the key and make it as precise as possible.

Pretty simple, huh? Dave notes you can use pliers and safety gloves for this simple DIY, and please be careful not to cut yourself.

Microwave Hacks

Microwave Hacks

Ever since the microwave was invented, it has been saving home cooks who are short on time. Whether it’s re-heating leftovers or heating up water for tea, the microwave is one of the hardest-working kitchen appliances. But it’s not just for warming up prepared food anymore; the microwave is also a versatile appliance that can be used in unexpected ways. The microwave hacks contained in this infographic will provide many shortcuts for your food prep routine!

Knowing how to utilize your microwave for food prep can save you time and help you make the most out of your food. For example, when juicing a citrus fruit, try putting it in the microwave for 20 seconds to soften it up a bit. This will yield you the most juice, without having to strain your muscles! Or, microwave garlic or tomatoes before cooking to make them easier to peel.

Your renewed zest for microwaving foods may come at a steep price: a big mess in your microwave. The solution to this lies in, you guessed it, another microwave hack! Simply place a bowl of water with two squeezed-out lemon halves (and their juice) in the microwave and set for five minutes. This will allow you to easily wipe down any food that may have dried on the microwave walls. Read on for more microwave hacks including how to disinfect a cutting board or kitchen sponge!

Chip clips are great for keeping your chips and other snacks from going stale. Here’s how to easily make one out of a wine cork.

In this video from the HouseholdHacker YouTube channel, you’ll learn, among other things, how a few cuts with a kitchen knife turns a wine cork into the perfect chip clip. Get a dry wine cork, stand it up on its end, and make a cut about an inch deep. Now you can quickly seal your chip bags and retain that almighty crispiness. If you don’t have any corks around, you can turn an old hanger into one as well.
