Harrison Library Fines Dead Woman For Overdue Book.

Even the dead apparently have to pay the fines on their overdue books at one Westchester County library.

Elizabeth Schaper said she was charged a 50-cent late fee while turning in a book that her late mother had checked out of a Harrison Public Library branch.

“I was in shock,” Schaper said. “This has rocked me to my core.”

Schaper’s mother, Ethel Schaper, died at the age of 87 on Sept. 16 after suffering a massive stroke. A few days later, Schaper said she found a library book, “The Price of Silence,” by Camilla Trinchieri, that her mother had checked out from the library.

“My mother was an avid reader—she read an average of two books a week,” Schaper said. “She was a frequent patron of the library.”

Schaper said she returned the book last week, and was stunned when the man behind the library counter told her of the 50-cent fee.

“I told him that maybe he didn’t hear me right, that my mother had just died, otherwise I’m sure that she would have returned it on time,” Schaper said. “His only reply was that, ‘That will be 50 cents.”’

Connie Perrotta, a secretary for the director of the Harrison Public Library, confirmed the incident occurred but said that the library would have no comment.

Schaper said a couple days after the incident another library employee called to apologize and offered to return the fine she had paid.

Ahmadinejad Thumbs His Nose At The U.N.

As if we needed more proof that the U.N. is worthless and weak, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stood in front of the U.N. General Assembly and basically told them to kiss his ass. Ahmadinejad said his nation will ignore demands by the Security Council to halt uranium enrichment and in his opinion the nuclear issue of Iran is now closed.

Iran tells U.N.: Nuclear issue ‘closed’.

Iran’s defiant stance on its nuclear research program took center stage Tuesday at the opening of the General Assembly, with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declaring the issue “closed” while leaders of France and Germany issued ominous warnings about his nation’s alleged weapons ambitions.

“In the last two years, abusing the Security Council, the arrogant powers have repeatedly accused Iran and even made military threats and imposed illegal sanctions against it,” Ahmadinejad said. “I officially announce that in our opinion the nuclear issue of Iran is now closed and has turned into an ordinary agency matter” between Iran and the U.N.’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, he said.

The Iranian leader said his nation would ignore demands by the Security Council to halt uranium enrichment activities.

The bombing begins in five minutes.

Nurse Ratched from “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” has become a popular metaphor for the corrupting influence of power and authority in bureaucracies.

Hillary’s similarities to Nurse Ratched are eerie.

Hillary Clinton and health care do not mix.

Putting Hillary in charge of the Democratic health-care plan for the election is a little like asking Mike Dukakis to be in charge of military photo ops. Dukakis, one might suppose, would tell candidates they should stay away from tanks, and if they ever get near one, to at least refuse the headgear. Clinton, for her part, has taken a similar tack, using the 1993 plan like a chart of troubled waters.

The problem is, even without the ludicrous headgear, the famous Dukakis photo would have been a disaster because it showed Dukakis in a tank. It wasn’t the headgear that was the problem, it was the nerdy candidate.

Likewise, a look at the Clinton plan suggests that the fundamental problem from 1993 is still with us: Hillary Clinton and health care do not mix.

This weekend’s entertainment: Abbott and Costello’s classic “Who’s on First“.

For those who are unfamiliar with them, Abbott is the guy on the right, Costello is on the left.

Columbia University: More Friendly To Ahmadinejad Than To The U.S. Military

Bill Kristol states the obvious.

Columbia University: Ahmadinejad Yes, ROTC No.

Meanwhile: As Columbia welcomes Ahmadinejad to campus, Columbia students who want to serve their country cannot enroll in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) at Columbia. Columbia students who want to enroll in ROTC must travel to other universities to fulfill their obligations. ROTC has been banned from the Columbia campus since 1969. In 2003, a majority of polled Columbia students supported reinstating ROTC on campus. But in 2005, when the Columbia faculty senate debated the issue, President Bollinger joined the opponents in defeating the effort to invite ROTC back on campus.

A perfect synecdoche for too much of American higher education: they are friendlier to Ahmadinejad than to the U.S. military.
