A Diabetic Alert Dog was acting op, so a mom called the school to check on her daughter. What the dog sensed is remarkable.

How do you live up to a name like Hero?

Well, for this clever little Lab, it’s all part of the day job.

Hero is a trained diabetic alert dog. He has kept four-year-old Sadie safe ever since he joined her and her family as a puppy.

Sadie was born with Down’s syndrome and, three months later, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Hero is there to let her parents know when Sadie’s blood sugar levels drop too low or get too high, using his strong sense of smell.

He’s able to detect changes to her blood sugar levels through an odour that’s emitted by the body when those chemical changes occur.

When the blood sugar levels are too low, Hero whines and will offer her parents his left paw. When they’re too high, he offers them the right paw.

Which is pretty incredible in itself. But, last December, the family say the closeness of the bond between Sadie and her Hero became even clearer.

On the day in question, Sadie was in her special needs class at Deerfield Elementary School in Cedar Hills, while Hero was at home in Pleasant Grove, over five miles away.

Hero started behaving as he would whenever Sadie’s blood sugar levels are dropping. ‘He’s normally a very quiet dog. Whining is not in his protocol. But he just started whining and he would not stop,’ mum Michelle Brooks told KUTV News.

Michelle wasn’t sure what it could be, given that Sadie was miles away, but decided to call her school just in case.

‘(Sadie’s mom) called me and asked if I could check her numbers and they were fine,’ teacher Ms.Stoneman explained. ‘I tested her and it was fine. Then within half an hour she went down.’

Sadie’s headteacher Caroline Knadler, who also has Type 1 diabetes, couldn’t believe the dog had sensed a problem, despite the two being miles apart.

‘I’ll be honest, it kinda blew my mind,’ she said. ‘How can it be based on smell? It really got me thinking. What is Hero alerting on?’

Hero’s trainer KC Owens agreed it was pretty unbelievable. ‘I can’t explain it,’ she said. ‘I think it’s like mother’s intuition. These dogs have abilities and senses beyond our understanding.’

In a Facebook post, written after the story of Sadie and Hero was shared on US TV, mum Michelle wrote: ‘We were nervous to do the story because we didn’t want to give the impression that all dogs alerts long distance. They don’t. We didn’t want to appear like we were making crazy claims about our dog’s ability.

‘While we can’t and won’t even try to explain how this happens, we feel blessed. Even without the long distance alerts, he is amazing!’
She also responded to comments that Hero was a little more ‘cuddly’ than he should be. ‘I want to assure everyone that he is very healthy and we see his vet often to assure he stays that way,’ she said.

‘Bottom line is he’s the perfect dog for Sadie in every way. His size and structure was actually one of the reasons KC matched him to us.’
The clue’s in the name really.

A 2015 Nissan Tsuru, made in Mexico, goes head on with a 2016 Nissan Versa made in the US.

Is it any wonder why Nissan will stop making the Mexican Tsuru next May?

“They don’t make ’em like they used to.” Chances are, you’ve heard that before. And thank goodness they don’t.

Case in point, the Nissan Tsuru – a common sight in Mexico as taxicabs, the Tsuru is essentially a ‘new’ 1992 Sentra. It’s cheap, simple, and as the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows, has the ability to turn into a four-wheeled accordion in the event of a crash.

The IIHS collaborated with the Latin and Global NCAP groups to show how a Mexican market-spec 2015 Nissan Tsuru would fare against a U.S.-spec 2016 Nissan Versa sedan, all in a bid to not only highlight the differences between U.S. and Mexican automotive safety requirements, but to also get cars with zero-star crash test ratings – like the Tsuru – off Mexican roads.

To say the least, the results are alarming. Both cars were travelling at 40 mph, or just over 64 km/h. While the Versa‘s airbags and structure do a formidable job in keeping the dummy relatively unscathed, we definitely can’t say the same about the Tsuru. Let’s just say, after seeing how the Tsuru’s A-pillar deforms so quickly, a steering wheel flying off is the last thing we’d worry about.

According to the NCAP, more than 4,000 fatalities in Mexico were linked to Nissan Tsuru crashes between 2007 and 2012.

This mesmerizing 52-minute video takes you on a walking tour of the picturesque yet disturbing sites of Adolf Hitler’s mountain hideaway.

From an aerial view, the camera zooms in on various points so that you have an idea of where things were in relation to each other and how expansive a semi-military complex it was.

When the videographer stops at a point of interest, a picture of that site from the Nazi era is superimposed on the video, showing the viewer a glimpse of the past.

Hitler’s Berghof

“These were the best times of my life. My great plans were forged here” ~ Adolf Hitler.

Hitler’s retreat in the mountains of Bavaria was one of the most important centers of government in the Third Reich. Hitler spent more time in the Berghof than in his Berlin office.

It was in this oversized chalet that Hitler planned the invasions of Poland, France and Russia and the events that would change the lives of millions.

Adolf Hitler’s interest in the hills above Berchtesgaden began in 1923, when he came to visit his friend and mentor, Dietrich Eckart, who was living at the Platterhof Hotel. Hitler traveled there under the name of “Herr Wolf” and held meetings with supporters in local guesthouses.

After he was released from Landsberg prison in 1926, following his unsuccessful coup in Munich, he came back to the Obersalzberg.

He stayed in a small cabin (no longer there) on the mountain near the Platterhof. The remainder of Mein Kampf was written during his visit there.

Florida Man Arrested For Throwing His Glass Eye

The eyes have it!

A Florida man in police custody removed his glass eye and threw it at hospital personnel, according to cops who rearrested the suspect on a felony charge.

Edward Dorsey, 54, was first arrested Sunday morning on a domestic violence charge for allegedly striking his wife during an 8 AM argument in the couple’s Largo home. A police report notes that drugs and alcohol appear to have played a role in the confrontation.

Following the misdemeanor collar, Dorsey was transported to the Largo Medical Center for treatment.

While in the emergency room, Dorsey “removed his glass eye” and then “threw his glass eye at the ER doctor and ER nurse,” a Largo Police Department officer reported.

Before flinging the fake eye, Dorsey was instructed by hospital personnel and a cop “to not take the eye out in the first place.” Dorsey ignored those commands, an arrest affidavit charges, and declared, “I can do whatever I feel like doing.”

The airborne eye does not appear to have caused any injuries, though it is unclear whether the eye hit any hospital workers.

Seen above, the unemployed Dorsey was charged with battery on an emergency medical care provider. He is locked up in the county jail on a combined bond of $30,000.

Jail records indicate that Dorsey has the words “Dorsey Touch” tattooed on his forearm and is “Missing left eye.”
